Indian Reverse Glass Paintings

Set of nine Indian reverse glass paintings. Six are in gilded frames and three are painted. Painting on glass was introduced into India in the 18th century by itinerant Chinese artists and was generally a middle class art form. French Aubusson verdure tapestry cartoon, gouache on paper, in a mahogany frame with an ebonized inner molding, depicting charming country scene of woodlands, river, bridge, a chateau and mountains in the background with bold trees, foliage and bird. Tapestry cartoons are the life size models from which tapestries are woven. The wools and silks were died to match the painting and the weaver copied it.
